Proverbs 2018 : Day Thirty One

We have completed our journey for this month through the Book of Proverbs and my hope and prayer is that it will be the first of many trips that we all take searching for wisdom!

This morning we come to the words of King Lemuel, or more specifically the wisdom that his mother passed on to him!  It should come as no surprise that she warns him about the harlot and riotous living, something we saw from King Solomon in the early chapters as well.  But the focus of the chapter is on the virtuous wife:  Finding a helpmeet fit for a King!  “Who can find a virtuous wife? For her worth is far above rubies.”

Today the feminists marching in our streets are there in large part as a reaction to many ungodly actions by ungodly men and thus it is difficult for them to see the wisdom of such teaching.  And of course we also have far too many young men looking for the right woman in all the wrong places.  Thus it is very important for us to see that it is here where we find the proper Biblical perspective on marriage. This chapter has been studied, rightly and wrongly, down through the years and continues to be a pillar of strength and wisdom for countless strong marriages.

We must also remember that the Apostle Paul explains in Ephesians 5 how marriage is the grand picture of Christ and the Church, of Jesus and His bride! So when we consider all that the virtuous woman does here in this chapter we should keep in mind how it instructs us about the work of the Church as we carry out the Great Commission that her Husband has given to her!  “The heart of her husband safely trusts her; So he will have no lack of gain. She does him good and not evil All the days of her life.”

And finally, may we see many husbands and children properly honoring the wives and mothers in their lives today as a good witness to a watching world: “She watches over the ways of her household, And does not eat the bread of idleness.   Her children rise up and call her blessed;  Her husband also, and he praises her:   “Many daughters have done well, But you excel them all.”
