Proverbs 2018 : Day Ten

With chapter ten we begin what if often called the formal proverbs which will take us through chapter 29 of this Book of Wisdom. These Proverbs begin with very simple contrasts and there is a sort of progression as we work our way through these chapters, where more and more wisdom is required to see what is being taught.

Wikipedia says a proverb is “a simple and concrete saying, popularly known and repeated, that expresses a truth based on common sense or the practical experience of humanity.”  Now of course the Wisdom that we find here in the Book of Proverbs does not come from practical experience or from man, but is wisdom given to us directly from our Creator, and thus we should pay close attention!

With this chapter we begin to see another contrast, between the ‘righteous’ and the ‘wicked.’ It is important to remember that this is not suggesting or teaching some sort of works based salvation but is simply pointing out again that there are two paths or roads to follow and it is very important to consider which we are on: We must chose wisdom over foolishness and righteousness over wickedness!

As Jesus said at the end of the Sermon on the Mount, we can build on a foundation of stone or a foundation of sand and that is exactly what we see in verse 28:
“The hope of the righteous will be gladness, But the expectation of the wicked will perish.
The way of the Lord is strength for the upright, But destruction will come to the workers of iniquity.”
