Proverbs 2018 : Day Nine

Chapter nine begins with words that should come to mind each week as we celebrate the Lord’s Supper in our worship services!

“Wisdom has built her house, She has hewn out her seven pillars; She has slaughtered her meat, She has mixed her wine, She has also furnished her table. She has sent out her maidens, She cries out from the highest places of the city, “Whoever is simple, let him turn in here!” As for him who lacks understanding, she says to him, “Come, eat of my bread And drink of the wine I have mixed. Forsake foolishness and live, And go in the way of understanding.”

Here we see the summary of the introduction if you will before we begin to ponder the actual proverbs beginning in chapter ten: Here is the free offer of the Gospel, the Good News that God has done it all! The Table is set and the provisions for eternal life have been graciously provided by Lady Wisdom.  Those who have not embraced them should remember the warning we saw back in chapter one:
Proverbs 1:24 “Because I have called and you refused, I have stretched out my hand and no one regarded, 25 Because you disdained all my counsel, And would have none of my rebuke, 26 I also will laugh at your calamity; I will mock when your terror comes, 27 When your terror comes like a storm, And your destruction comes like a whirlwind, When distress and anguish come upon you. 28 “Then they will call on me, but I will not answer; They will seek me diligently, but they will not find me. 29 Because they hated knowledge And did not choose the fear of the Lord, 30 They would have none of my counsel And despised my every rebuke.”

And the contrast could not be made any clearer than it is again at the end of this chapter: Come and dine in the abundance of the Lord’s Table or follow the ‘wisdom’ of the world which takes you on a much different path:
Because the foolish woman also makes an offer: “Whoever is simple, let him turn in here”; And as for him who lacks understanding, she says to him, “Stolen water is sweet, And bread eaten in secret is pleasant.” But he does not know that the dead are there, That her guests are in the depths of hell.”
